Advanced Genomics and Biopsy

Course Objectives

This three-day workshop aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the genetics services used in ART, hands-on trophectoderm biopsy, and the handling of biopsied cells. The workshop is intended to provide participants with the core knowledge and intermediate practical skills under the supervision of experienced practitioners. It is not intended to be a complete training program to attain full clinical competence. Participants are urged to complete a logbook of in-house training.


Program

Current Status of Genetic Analysis for ART

  • Genetics 101 – an introduction to genetics for non-geneticists
  • Screening Tests – Carrier Screening and NIPT
  • PGD – analysis of sex-linked and single gene defects
  • PGS/aneuploidy screening – comparison of methods and clinical data
  • Controversies and future directions – dealing with difficult clinical issues and how is the technology developing?
  • Increasing Safety in the IVF Laboratory – Electronic Witness

This section gives an introduction to genetic testing and an overview of the technology and clinical data relating to genetic testing of biopsied material from oocytes and embryos. Historical data and evaluation of newest testing methodologies will be presented, such that participants should have a sound basic appreciation of the potential benefits and limitations of these techniques. In addition, discussions will look at the controversial parts of genetic testing such as dealing with mosaicism, addressing the issue of whether we discard potentially viable embryos, and how the developing technology might impact clinical practice. The use of electronic witness to increase IVF safety will also be highlighted.

Trophectoderm Biopsy

  • Patients and aetiologies – which patients may benefit and which will not
  • Practical considerations – timings, media, techniques

These sections specifically address why trophectoderm biopsy has become the stage of choice, with the intention of giving participants a sound grasp of the core skills. In these sections, participants will learn primarily about trophectoderm biopsy techniques, media and consumables used and given an introduction to how biopsies are managed in the clinical setting.

Hands-On Sessions

  • Trophectoderm biopsy
  • Cell preparation
  • Electronic witness in action

This sections specifically address the practical issues for trophectoderm biopsy, with the intention of giving participants a sound grasp of the core skills. In this section, participants will learn primarily about techniques, media and consumables used and given an introduction to how biopsies are managed in the clinical setting. The electronic witness system will be demonstrated during the hands-on training.


Minimum Experience

It is ESSENTIAL that all participants be experienced ICSI practitioners and/or previous embryo biopsy experience.


Fee

Course fee is $1000. Transportation and accommodation are not included. Lunch and refreshments will be provided during the course.
