The IVF Acronym Challenge for National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW)

Three letters. If you’ve been trying to conceive for a while (or longer than your gym teacher from high school told you it would take), or if you’ve been given a formal diagnosis that makes getting pregnant more difficult than you imagined, you’ve no doubt seen those three letters often.

If you look quickly, it almost looks like, “I’ve” as in “I’ve got this!” but after countless doctor appointments, staring at ovulation prediction kits wondering, “Wait… is that one or two lines? Am I ovulating? Dammit. Why didn’t I just buy the digital OPK’s!”, or sitting quietly drinking champagne while downing soft cheeses at your umpteenth friend’s baby shower, you may not feel like “you’ve got this”. Not by a long shot.

IVF, of course, stands for in vitro fertilization. In vitro fertilization is the process of fertilization by retrieving eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining those eggs and sperm in a laboratory dish to gently suggest these two crazy kids get together and make a baby. The resulting embryo(s) are then transferred to the uterus in the hopes that they implant.

I can think of few, who as a child, day dreamed about taking hormone injections or having their eggs retrieved through their hoo ha. However, for some, it gives them their best chances of conceiving. Plus, as one of my doctors said to me, “Instead of looking at it as something sad, be grateful that the technology exists!”

That was all I needed at the time – a beaker is half full kind of reproductive endocrinologist.

Still, given all of your options, positivity and humor aren’t a bad way to go when it comes to IVF.

To make the IVF acronym a little less clinical and a little more fun we, in a sense, “flipped the script” in honor of this week’s National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), and asked our followers on social media for their suggestions! We gave some examples like:

I’m Very Funny
I’m Very Fertile (go with me on this)
It’s Very Frustrating
In Vitro Frustration
I Value French fries (two F’s but still)

Below are each social media platform, their handle or name and a link to their blog (if they have one). Thank you to those who gave their suggestions! As you’ll see, they ranges from witty, sweet and well, brutal honesty.

If I may just sneak in my own here… mine are Handle: @the2weekwait / jennjaypal, BlogThe 2 Week Wait and my suggestions are ‘Insufferable Voyage of Fertility’ and ‘In Search of Vanishing Fecundity’.

There are other thoughts for the F word but this is a family building blog. And now, over to social media…
